If you come across a horse with one of its front legs tied to the hind leg on the same side, you might think you're looking at a case of animal cruelty. But in many cases, that's not what's happening at all. This technique is known as hobbling. The idea is simple. A soft rope or strap loosely connects a front leg to a hind leg on the same side. The horse can still stand, walk slowly, grays, and move around comfortably. But its ability to suddenly take off at full speed is greatly reduced. Instead of being completely restrained, the horse is still free to eat grass and explore the area at a slow pace. Think of it as temporarily disabling the horse's turbo mode. One horse owner learned this lesson the hard way. Wanting to prove that his horse didn't need to be hobbled, he removed the rope and let it roam freely. The horse immediately took advantage of its newfound freedom and disappeared. What followed was several days of searching, including chasing after the runaway horse on a motorcycle before finally bringing it back home. Stories like this are why many experienced horse owners joke that there is no such thing as an innocent horse wearing hobbles.
