Will cardio actually make you lose muscle mass? The YouTuber Jeremy Ether wanted a prep for a high rocks race and he wanted to see if all that cardio he was going to have to do for the 30-day prep for the race was going to make him lose muscle mass. Before the 30 days of running, Jeremy got an MRI to see exactly how much muscle mass he has and he'll get another MRI after the 30 days to see how much he lost and where he lost it on his body. They're sorting out at the beginning of the running challenge. Jeremy ran for 45 to 60 minutes at a zone two pace so that's roughly 60 to 70% of your max run. Now, there are three main rules Jeremy stuck to to keep as much muscle mass as possible while doing cardio. First rule was to never do cardio before weight training. cardio before weight training will tire out your nervous system making your weight training sessions much worse. The next rule is to eat enough calories. With all of the extra running, you're burning through more calories so you have to make sure you're eating enough to refuel. The last rule is to protect your legs. With all of this running, it's a lot of strain on the legs but you have to make sure you're still weight training your lower body. At the end of the 30 days of constant running, based off the new MRI, Jeremy didn't lose any muscle in both his upper body or lower body. So no, cardio does not make you lose muscle mass as long as you're doing it properly.
