Why can nobody on Earth remember being born? Or their first birthday? It is not because nothing happened back then. It is because your brain made a choice to erase all of it. Scientists call this childhood amnesia and almost every single human on the planet experiences it the exact same way. The reason comes down to a part of your brain called the hippocampus, which is responsible for taking your experiences and finding them away as long-term memories. The problem is that this part of your brain does not fully develop until around the age of three. So for the first few years of your life, your brain is fully awake and recording everything around you, but it has nowhere to actually store any of it. It is like filming the most important moments of your life on a camera that has no memory card inside. But it gets stranger, because during those first years, your brain is building itself as an insane speed, creating twice as many connections as an adult brain and destroying millions of them every single day. That constant rewiring is the reason babies can learn an entire language faster than any adult ever could. But it is also the reason your early memories get what your brain is literally overwriting itself to make room for the skills it needs to survive.
