During the school's date auction, I was backstage when some mean girls pushed me onto the stage for the boys to bid on me to take me on a date. Everyone laughed and started whispering. Why is she here? Who would want her? She's so chopped! The host looked confused to see me but smiled anyway. Let's start the bidding. Someone held up their number sign and shouted, "I'll take her for 50 cents. Everyone pointed and laughed at me. Was that all I was worth? But then a voice came from the back. I'll take her for $200. I looked up and saw Shane, my childhood boy best friend from when I was little. We hadn't talked in years. Why did he want to spend so much to go on a date with me? As I walked off the stage to go on the date with him, I didn't know what to expect, but we went to a restaurant nearby. And the whole time, he completely ignored me. He went on his phone, and whenever I tried to speak, he'd say, "I'm playing clash of clans and I need to focus." It felt like he was trying to humiliate me the same way the mean girls did earlier, and I couldn't understand why he did this. But when I got up to leave, he suddenly reached forward and grabbed my wrist. "Where are you going?" he demanded. I glared at him. "This date is over." I snapped. He looked sad. I'm sorry. I was just so nervous that I forgot how to act on a date. Let me start over. Please, every part of me wanted to walk away. But the rules said I had to stay until the date was over. But just before I could make my decision, I heard a girl's voice shout behind us. Shane, I turned around and saw the mean girl from earlier, walking over with two of her mean girl friends. Hey Shane, I hope we're not interrupting your fake date. I turned to face her, but Shane stood up first. Fake, Lori smirked, and held up her phone. I paid you 200 bucks to take her out and embarrass her. Don't pretend you forgot. Every table around us went silent. I yanked my wrist out of Shane's hand and stared at him. You took money from her, Shane pulled out his phone and tapped a voice recording from the mean girl that she sent Shane. Her voice came out of the speaker. 200 bucks if you take her out and make her cry in public. The whole restaurant turned to stare at Lori. I told her no a week ago, Shane said. Then I went to the bank and pulled out my entire paycheck so I could take you out on a date. He looked at me because I've liked you since we were eight. The mean girl rolled her eyes. Whatever. No way she was worth $200. You're right, she was worth more.
