My friend John is getting married soon, but he cannot afford a new house and has been cramped in a small room with his parents. As his best friend, I decided to give him a special gift and renovate a house for him with my own hands. I bought an abandoned house online for $8,000 at auction, paying for it without ever visiting the property in person. But the moment I actually stood at the front door, my heart sank. The weeds in the yard were waist high and trash inside the house was piled from the floor to the ceiling. The place was even more rundown than I had imagined, but thinking about John and his upcoming wedding, no matter how hard things were, I made up my mind to clean the whole place up. On the first day, I tackled the yard. The lawn mower roared for most of the day before the stone path buried under the overgrowth finally came back into view. On the second day, I went inside and hauled out trash bag after bag, wearing through an entire pair of gloves before I had cleared enough space to stand by nightfall. On the third day, it was the backyard pool. The bottom was blanketed in rotting leaves and black mud. I pumped out all the dirty water and got down on my knees with a brush, scrubbing inch by inch until the blue tiles slowly started showing through. The wedding is still a month away, and I honestly have no idea whether I can get this house fully renovated in time. Stay tuned for part two.
