What if I told you that the year you're watching this isn't 2026, but 1729? Huh? In the 297 years in between, we're invented by a pope and an emperor who wanted to be alive for the year 1000. Welcome to Debunkology, a new series where I, an actual archaeologist, correct pseudo-archaeology in history because people are trying to erase real history. Phantom Time Hypothesis is a theory first put forward in 1991 by the German writer Harry Bear Eilig. His claim is that the early Middle Ages, specifically the years 614 to 911 CE, never actually happened, in that everything historians placed in that window, including the reign of Charlemagne, was invented by people with the reason to lie about the date. Eilig's explanation centers on two men, Poli Roman Emperor Otto III and Pope Sylvester II. As the theory goes, Otto wanted his reign to coincide with the year 1000, a thousand years after Christ, so the two men arranged to have roughly three centuries of history fabricated to Lama calendar on that symbolic year. So the theory leaned hardest on a past issue with the calendar. When Pope Gregory the 13th reformed the calendar in 1582, he dropped 10 days to correct for drift in the older Julian calendar. Eilig calculated that if the Julian calendar had truly been running since 45 BCE, that drift should have reached closer to around 13 days, and treated the shortfall as proof that fewer years had actually passed than the record claimed. He also pointed to a perceived gap in the development of Romanesque architecture across Europe, but the 1582 reform wasn't correcting back to 45 BCE to begin with. It was correcting drift back to the council of Nicaea in 325 CE, when the spring equinox was fixed to March 21st for the purpose of calculating Easter. If you correct the starting point, the 10-day adjustment fits exactly. There is no missing time to explain. More proof towards the truth is that Halley's comment returns roughly every 76 years on orbit that we can calculate precisely forward or backwards, and its appearances in 760 and 837 CE were independently recorded by Chinese, Japanese, Islamic and European observers, right in the middle of the years that Eilig says never happened. And eclipses from the same period line up the exact same way recorded across multiple civilizations and landing exactly where modern calculations say that they should. In the most important part, Eilig's theory only ever explains Europe. Through these invented centuries, the Tang Dynasty was ruling China, the Abbasid Caliphate was flourishing in Baghdad, and the Maya civilization was keeping its own calendar in Mesoamerica, each with continuous records that own nothing to the capital of Germany. For the theory to even make sense, all of those civilizations would have to be in on the same fabricated timeline. Eilig published the full theory in a 1996 book, and no historian, archaeologist, or astronomer has since found evidence to support it. It's a good example of how one tiny detail can be built into an entire alternate history once you stop checking it against everything outside of your own argument.
