Is it currently 1729, not 2026? According to the Phantom Time hypothesis (proposed by German writer Heribert Illig in 1991) 297 years of the early Middle Ages (614-911 CE) were fabricated by Pope Sylvester II and Holy Roman Emperor Otto III to align their reigns with the year 1000.
