Some of the most dangerous things in a federal prison camp aren't so obvious. When I surrendered to prison, I got off to a pretty good start. I squat and coughed. I went to laundry after I got to the camps. All the showers and toilets, my bunk, ate in the chow hall for the first time, stood for count at 4 p.m. And just like that, around 5 p.m., I'm walking around that dusty dirt track with someone who had been in prison for a year on a six-year sentence for Medicare fraud, plead guilty of tens of millions of dollars to victims, yet while walking around the track, he told me he was the victim. He was the judges fault, his lawyers fault, and I knew when I heard that, he was setting himself up to have a life sentence, and that's when it hit me. The most dangerous thing in a federal prison camp isn't violence. It is allowing yourself to be a victim. I was there because I made bad decisions, and the hard part was ensuring I didn't associate with people who allowed themselves to be the victim.
