Waking up with passion for what you do and who you do it with. Most people never find that in an entire career. I found it in this business. So when people ask if my kids will take it over, my honest answer is: I don’t need them to take over the company. I need them to find their version of this.

A question I get asked a lot being a second generation owner is what I want my kids to ever take over this business. It's a tough question because they're seven and four right now, so thinking about them running a business is somewhat alarming, but when I think about it, I think about this core thing and why I love what I do so much is I just want them to find something that they're truly passionate about, whether it's this, whether it's something else, whatever it may be, being able to wake up with passion every day for what you do and the people that you do it with is something that I don't think a lot of people find in life. For me, I've found it with this business and what we do and how we get to take care of customers and work together as a team. So ultimately, can you find something that you're truly passionate about?

Here’s the fastest way to know if you’re making money or just staying busy: know your three numbers. 50% gross profit. 35% overhead. 15% profit. If you can’t say where you stand on each right now, that’s the first problem to fix.

If I could only track five numbers in my HVAC sales department, it would be: revenue per lead, close rate, average install revenue, discount rate, and revenue to budget. Most owners track none of them daily and then wonder why the month got away from them. Measure every day and the numbers stop surprising you.

If your tech left for $2 more an hour, money wasn't the problem. The problem is there was nothing else keeping them. Techs spend most days working on their own. If the money's right, it's the one-on-ones, the organizational support, the daily encouragement that keeps them here. A small raise can't outbid a place people actually want to work and feel supported.

This is where we build technicians from scratch. Zero experience walks in, and electricians, plumbers, and HVAC pros walk out. Everything in this lab is functional. They can tear it apart, we can plant faults, and they can fail safely here instead of in a customer’s home.
