Most people set goals they’re sure they can hit. I set one I might not. I’m from Indianapolis, and I’m putting a team together to win the Indy 500. Because the best part of a big dream isn’t just the finish line. It’s everywhere the chase takes you on the way there.

My goal is to build a team to win the Indy 500. As business owners, we all have really big goals. As we have grown our company at Peterman Brothers, my goals have got bigger and bigger. At this point, my goal being from Indianapolis is to win the most illustrious race in all of motorsports, the Indy 500. I am working to put a team together to go chase this big dream. What I can tell you is big dreams are some of the most fun to chase. And at the end of the day, if you don't end up accomplishing your big dreams, it's a lot of fun to look back and to see where that big dream took you on the course and on the road map to get there. Here’s the fastest way to know if you’re making money or just staying busy: know your three numbers. 50% gross profit. 35% overhead. 15% profit. If you can’t say where you stand on each right now, that’s the first problem to fix.
If I could only track five numbers in my HVAC sales department, it would be: revenue per lead, close rate, average install revenue, discount rate, and revenue to budget. Most owners track none of them daily and then wonder why the month got away from them. Measure every day and the numbers stop surprising you.
