You don't need 14 softwares to run an effective business. You need a handful that you actually use, and a team with the bandwidth to use them properly. Before you buy another shiny object, ask two questions: do we have the staff to implement it, and will anyone actually know if it's working?

And today's home service world, there's a ton of software, there's a ton of AI, there's all these shiny objects that are supposedly going to make your business better. What I always tell companies we work with that can't stop the growth is that no AI solution, no software is ever gonna make your business grow. Is it gonna make you more efficient? Sure, possibly. But I also think you need to look at, do I have the staff, do I have the bandwidth to properly implement this potential solution? What I see is you go into a small business and they're running 14 different softwares and no one actually knows if it's working, no one knows if it's actually making them more efficient. They're just running it to say, oh yeah, I run this software and that software and so on and so forth. We need to make sure that we're actually utilizing these to be efficient. And what I will tell you is a lot can be done without softwares, yes, you need some, but you don't need 14 to run an effective business.

Here’s the fastest way to know if you’re making money or just staying busy: know your three numbers. 50% gross profit. 35% overhead. 15% profit. If you can’t say where you stand on each right now, that’s the first problem to fix.

If I could only track five numbers in my HVAC sales department, it would be: revenue per lead, close rate, average install revenue, discount rate, and revenue to budget. Most owners track none of them daily and then wonder why the month got away from them. Measure every day and the numbers stop surprising you.

If your tech left for $2 more an hour, money wasn't the problem. The problem is there was nothing else keeping them. Techs spend most days working on their own. If the money's right, it's the one-on-ones, the organizational support, the daily encouragement that keeps them here. A small raise can't outbid a place people actually want to work and feel supported.

This is where we build technicians from scratch. Zero experience walks in, and electricians, plumbers, and HVAC pros walk out. Everything in this lab is functional. They can tear it apart, we can plant faults, and they can fail safely here instead of in a customer’s home.
