An apple a day keeps to doctor away! Who told you that? My grandma! Everybody knows it! And who told her? Her grandma? Still haven't learned a thing. Watch this. As usual, we're in America. Early 1900s. Apple growers have a big problem. Nobody wants to eat their apples. They're way too sour. And they're good for one thing only. Making hard cider, booze basically. And everybody drinks it every single day. But then America declares war on alcohol. State after state, cider gets banned. And prohibition is right around the corner. The growers find themselves sitting on millions of apples that aren't worth a dime anymore. Either they convince people to eat them. Or they go out of business. So they come up with a slogan. Or rather, they dig it up from an old Welsh. Saying that nobody has ever heard of. It's short, it rhymes. And it sticks in your head. Perfect for an ad. An apple a day keeps the doctor away. There's no science behind it. No doctor, no study. It's an old country saying turned into advertising for one reason only to sell apples. They start printing it in the newspapers and plastering it on every wall. They repeat it over and over for years until people start repeating it all on their own, teachers to their students, mothers to their children, grandmas to their grandkids, until nobody remembers where it came from anymore. In 2015, a team of researchers goes through the data on 8,000 people. The result, those who eat an apple a day see the doctor just as often as everybody else. However, a century, the most famous piece of health advice in the world has been nothing but an advertising stunt. Stop swallowing everything you're told. Read this book and make your grandma read it too.
