Never marry into a wealthy family until you know exactly what they expect from you. I spent three years thinking my in-laws actually loved me. Right up until they handed me a baby monitor at 7 in the morning and walked out. What I did next ended my marriage. For three years, I was completely blind to it. My husband Ethan has two older sisters who treat him like an absolute prince. Every August, they rent a $50,000 estate in Lake Tahoe. Infinity pool, a private chef, a literal yacht, the works. The first year as the shiny new wife, I desperately wanted them to love me. I'm a teacher, I adore kids, so I planned elaborate scavenger hunts for my five nieces and nephews. I baked, I played referee. I thought I was just being the cool, fun aunt. I had no idea. I was passing an audition. By year two, the trap was set. His sister broke literally tossed a baby monitor onto my lap at 7 in the morning. She flashed this fake Botox smile and said, "We're all taking the boat out today. You don't mind holding down the fort, right? You're just so naturally maternal." I was too stunned to say no. I spent 12 hours wiping noses, making crustless sandwiches and breaking up tantrums. When they finally got back, sunkissed and tipsy, Ethan gave me a quick peck and told me I was a lifesaver. But year three, year three was the final straw. It was a scorching Saturday afternoon. I was on the patio covered in sticky popsicle juice, physically restraining a toddler from jumping into the deep end. I paused to wipe the sweat out of my eyes, looked up at the second floor balcony, and froze. Ethan, his sisters and the other husbands were all lounging in cabanas. They were clinking frosted glasses, taking group selfies, completely ignoring the chaos below. Then my brother-in-law walked past me to grab a fresh beer. He stepped over a pile of wet, sandy towels, smirked, and said, "Gotta admit, having a built-in nanny really elevates the trip." He didn't offer to tag in. He didn't even hand me a bottle of water. The second we got back to our house that Sunday, Ethan dropped his bags in the hallway and casually asked what we were making for dinner. I snapped. I slammed the front door so hard. I am done! I yelled my voice shaking with pure rage. I am never setting foot in that Tahoe house again. Ethan rolled his eyes, crossing his arms defensively. "Oh come on. Stop being so dramatic." My sisters think you're amazing with the kids. I stepped right up to him, closing the distance between us. Ethan, they do not care about me. They care that they get a free 24/7 childcare service so they can day drink on a yacht without lifting a finger. His face turned red. He pointed a finger at me. If you boycott this trip next month, you are going to cause massive drama. I am not going to force my sisters to parent their own kids while they are trying to relax. The room went dead silent. I stared right into my husband's eyes. So I whispered, "My misery is the required entry fee for their luxury. He wouldn't even look at me. I just grabbed his keys and walked out. So I stayed home." Ethan went alone. By day two, my phone lit up. It was a frantic text from Brooke. Did she apologize? Nope, she texted. The twins threw an iPad in the lake. Ethan is locked in the guest room and we are literally losing our minds. Wish you were here. When Ethan finally dragged himself home on Sunday, he looked like he hadn't slept in a week. He stood in the doorway, surrounded by his bags, looking utterly defeated. And honestly, I just smiled and took a sip of my coffee.
