The walled in Medieval City of Chester is home to buildings dating from the Roman, Tudor and Victorian periods, with this history comes a chair of ghostly residents. The wall surrounding the city itself is notoriously haunted by the ghost of a Roman soldier. It is said he fell in love with a local Celtic girl and frequently left his post to meet her. However, her parents took advantage of this situation. One night when he left to meet the daughter, they killed the guards and snatched as much loot as they could. Upon return, his fellow men left alive, maded him in anger. Now he remains guarding his post that was neglected in life. A few streets away stand Stanley Place, a grade two-lister property, previously having been a boy school, museum and apartments. The building is said to be full of ghosts wandering its corridors, the most well-known being Elizabeth Warburton, a former owner. She is spotted regularly walking through solid walls. Another spirit of a grey-haired lady is seen sat at the piano, playing a Tudor-era song before vanishing along with her music. Chester was also home to a number of witch trials in the 1650s, presiding over these trials was a power-crazed judge who condemned around 32 people to execution. One being a local widow named Anne Thornton that was alleged to have consorted with the devil in the guise of a cat.
