Regulate your nervous system and stop being so emotional are sometimes the exact same sentence and we need to talk about it because that distinction really matters and sometimes It's just white supremacy with a therapy degree first there are absolutely times when you need to regulate to get calm You're spiraling before a big moment you're so activated in an argument. You can't hear your partner your body went into full panic mode Over something that isn't actually a threat. Yes, breathe regulate. That's exactly what it's for and all of those cases You're nervous system that louder than the situation called for right bringing it back down is genuinely useful but sometimes your nervous system is activated because something truly Activating is happening. You're in an environment that isn't safe. You're being mistreated. You're watching something unjust happen right in front of you That's not dysregulation. That's your body doing exactly what it's supposed to do and when Regulate yourself gets applied there. We're not helping someone heal We're teaching them to override a completely appropriate alarm and think about who gets told to regulate themselves the most Who's anger gets pathologized? Who's fear gets called irrational? Who's grief gets diagnosed instead of witnessed regulate your nervous system has a clinical degree behind it, right? Which makes it feel like you can't argue with it, but try replacing it next time You're about to tell someone to regulate themselves swap it out say stop being so emotional instead Does that feel okay to say to a person of color who's terrified about ice? Does it feel okay to say to a trans person who's scared about what's happening to them right now? Does it even feel okay to say to yourself while you're watching the world fall apart just something to think about?
