Why are coffee beans shaped like this?

Why is it that each coffee bean has a flat side and a more rounded side? Well, let's look at the fruit that it comes from called the coffee cherry. If we pinch one between our fingers, there's actually two seeds that pop out. These seeds have grown being pressed up against each other inside of the cherry. So the sides that are pressed into each other end up being more flat while the outsides stay more rounded. Each one of these after being dried will have its parchment removed revealing the green coffee underneath that will go on to be roasted.
