She was five, she wished for chocolate cake with pink frosting in the corner piece with the flour on it. When she was six, she wished to be taller so she could reach the kitchen counter without asking for help. When she was seven, she wished for a puppy, or maybe a pony, but she would settle for a goldfish. When she was eight, she wished summer would last forever, and at nine a later bedtime. When she was ten, she wished her body would grow up faster, and at eleven, she wished to be prettier. When she was twelve, she wished more boys would notice her, and when she was thirteen, she wished mirrors would stop being so honest. When she was fourteen, she wished her stomach would stop growling at night, but she promised herself it was a good thing. When she was fifteen, she wished she could eat cake again, without feeling like she had done something wrong. And at sixteen, she didn't wish at all. When she was seventeen, she wished her brain would stop screaming at her, and at eighteen, when she blew out the candles, she wished she wouldn't make it to see nineteen. But she made it to nineteen, and on that birthday, she wished someone would notice she was suffering. And at twenty, she wished for brighter days. But finally, on her twenty first birthday, she sat in front of chocolate cake with frosting too sweet, and a flower in the corner, and candles she never thought she'd get to see. So she made a wish with a mouthful of sugar and eyes bigger than her stomach. But it wasn't for smaller bones or a nicer body, and it wasn't to disappear. On her twenty first birthday, her only wish was that she could do it again, the same time next year.
