Your stuff holds a lot of weight and power over the trajectory of your life. People who waste their money on stuff have less money to spend on experiences. People who have excess possessions end up spending more money on housing to create space for the stuff. People turn down opportunities to hang out with friends because their homes are too messy with all their junk. The items you have and surround yourself with are a reflection of the life you’ve decided to create. Too many items can cause chaos, anxiety, and wastes time. But, the good news is that you can sell everything and start over. Instead of mindlessly accumulating things, you can strategically curate your life after a giant purge. Don’t think of getting rid of those items as a waste, think of it as a new direction to your life. lack of funds is the number one reason why people tell me that they can't move abroad. But I've got a little secret for you. You've got 300,000 items in your house available that you can sell. And the reason I know that is because before I ever moved abroad, I became a minimalist. And if you've ever moved your entire household worth of stuff, you know that there is so many items that it becomes absolutely overwhelming. If you sell everything and start over fresh without all those possessions, you will give yourself a lot of extra money just by selling those items. Having a garage sale is the best way to free up some cash and create a little fund for your move abroad journey. And I've got two really big tips when it comes to having an extremely successful garage sale. This is something that I share in my messy and minimalist e-course, but I'm going to share it with you right now. Tip number one is going to be how you do your signage. Everyone likes to just put things online these days, but that is not going to get the foot traffic. What you have to do is you have to go onto an electronic map, Google Maps, Apple Maps, whatever, and draw out from the major intersections all around your area. Even ones that are pretty freaking far away and draw out turn-by-turn, which arrows do you need to bring people from this freeway entrance, that freeway interest, this main commercial hub, and make sure that you have signs upon signs upon signs. When I did my successful garage sale, I made thousands of dollars to create my new pot of money to be able to do whatever I wanted with. We made sure we had at least 50 signs up. They were at every turn to get people from different areas of town that would never normally come to our house for a garage sale, but we brought them and we strung them along sign-by-sign because that is how you have a successful garage sale. And tip number two is to make sure that every sign says that you take credit cards and make sure you have a way to take credit cards, sign up to take square payments, take PayPal payments, take Venmo by credit card, make sure you have a way to accept credit cards because that's how you sell the high ticket items for a better price. You're going to sell your TV, you're going to sell your furniture for much higher prices when people can put that on a card because they don't have that much cash. And those two things alone allowed us to have so much more money at the end of our garage sale for our travel adventures. You can claim that money is the issue, but you've got wasted money sitting all over your house and you're not doing anything to turn that back into cash in order to make your dreams come true. If you actually wanted to move abroad, you would sell those things instead of staying paralyzed with the excuse that you don't have enough money to make it happen. I try to get parents not to glamorize living abroad with kids. Unless you don’t care about education and you have a bottomless bank account, life will likely be very routine as a family living overseas. These are my top 3 lessons from starting a new life in a new country. I never thought I would be teaching Americans how to flee their country. When I left the United States it seemed like a covid era decision, not necessarily a forever lifestyle. Five years later and I’ve become a different version of myself that I could have never imagined. My heart aches for all the good people stuck in America who deserve safety, calm, and happiness. In the absence of finding the “perfect” country, Americans are tolerating one of the worst countries. People are always reaching out to tell me they “would” move out of the United States if only some set of impossible criteria were met. Those people want the accolades for being willing to consider making a big exciting change, without actually doing a damn thing. Let me just save you some time. No country is perfect. But, that doesn’t mean there aren’t a lot of safer, healthier, happier, more progressive countries out there that would be wonderful new homes. Stop letting your current circumstances be held to no standard and your potential new home be held to impossible standards. Women are sick and tired of needing to be vigilant all the time. Our cortisol levels are out of control. Our nervous system is shot. Our give a fucks are gone. White American men are making life in the United States a battle ground for women. Walking after dark shouldn’t be considered a risky behavior.
