I was a sheep. I did everything that they told me to do. I went to college, I got married, I climbed the corporate ladder, bought a house in the suburbs. I even installed a white picket fence. We had kids, we sent them to private school, we drove an electric car. It was all a series of checkmarks on a checklist. And I did them all very well. And it wasn't until many years into this perfect life that I finally realized all the things I was accomplishing or receiving in my life were not actually making me happier. My entire life was on autopilot. And it wasn't until I started rethinking everything and realizing I was a sheep that I was willing to change anything because I had sold myself the idea that I wanted all of these things. I was so good at being a sheep. I didn't even know I wasn't free. And I'm going to insert a meme right here because the only difference between us and the sheep is that we think that we are free. When we go down this path, this one life expected path, we think that's what we want. And we sell ourselves on that idea that we want those things. I snapped out of it. I stopped being a sheep. I got rid of all the material possessions. I packed a passport and I got the hell out of there. And now I have designed a life that looks so different. You never could have told me 10 years ago that I was going to live on three different continents. And sometimes I wasn't going to know where I was going to live next week. And I was going to have to do paperwork constantly to prove my worth in all of these countries. But my life is so much freer now because I got out of this system. I stopped being an American sheep and just went and forged my own path. If you're rethinking the life that you're in currently and wondering, am I just doing what's expected of me? I'm going to say you probably are. You probably are. But that's why my account exists. I am trying to show Americans that what they are currently doing is not what they have to do. There is not set of standardized requirement for moving abroad. Each country has documents they require, which are what you’d expect: Birth Certificate Background Check Financial Information Passport Marriage Certificate Sometimes: health certificates, educational records, and letters of intent. But, the trick is that each country has different rules about how the records must be presented. Apostilles, translations, certified translations, certified copies, or notarized. So, before you start gathering documents, be sure you know which country and which exact visa you are applying for.
