I fitted a second shower and my husband cued, so we've got one bathroom in this house. One, three adults, one shower, and for the last two years it has been an absolute war zone every single morning. The problem started when Dean's brother Lee moved in with us just for a bit after his divorce. That was 19 months ago if anyone's counting, and I am counting. So now it's me, Dean and Lee, all trying to get ready for work in the same window, and there's exactly one shower. And here's the thing, I get up at 6am because I have the longest commute of anyone in this house, but somehow I was always the one who ended up going last. Dean would get in first because he had an early meeting which he had every single day apparently. Then Lee would slope in half a sleep and take these 40 minute showers where I genuinely think he was just standing there sleeping under the water. By the time I got in, it was lukewarm at best and I was already running late. I brought it up with Dean loads of times. I said, can we sort out some kind of schedule? Can Lee at least go last since he doesn't have to be anywhere till 10? And Dean would go, babe, it's just a shower, it's not a big deal, just get up earlier. Get up earlier, I'm already up at 6. What did he want, 5, 4? One morning I stood outside that door for 25 minutes in my towel, freezing. While Lee sang in there, and I missed my train, and I had to explain to my manager why I was late for the third time that month. I came home that night and told Dean I genuinely had enough. And he said, and I'll never forget this, he goes, it's really not that deep you're making a whole thing out of nothing. So I stopped making a thing out of it, I made a plan instead, I'd been saving for a little while, my own money from my own account. And it turns out our utility room off the kitchen already had the plumbing roughed in from when the previous owners started converting it and gave up. I got a bloke to come round, boat it, and about 6 weeks later I had a proper second shower fitted in there. Tiled, glass door, lovely little thing, I paid for all of it. Dean didn't contribute a penny because Dean didn't know it was happening. The morning it was finished, Dean came down and saw it and actually looked pleased. He goes, oh brilliant. So now we've got two, that'll sort the mornings out. And I just smiled and said, it will yeah, what I didn't tell him was that I'd had the fitter put a lock on that utility room door. And that shower is mine. I paid for it, it's on my side of the house, and I keep the only key in my handbag. Next morning I'm up, I'm in my shower out in 10 minutes, dressed, coffee, gone. And as I'm leaving, I can see Dean standing outside the main bathroom in his dressing gown, arms folded because Lee's in there doing his 40 minute concert like always. Dean text me at work. Why is the utility locked? I text back, because that's my bathroom. He rings me. He goes, what do you mean your bathroom were married? Everything's shared. And I said, funny that's exactly what I thought about the mornings for the last year and a half. He got proper wound up, said I was being childish, said I couldn't just claim a whole room, said it wasn't fair that I get one to myself while he has to queue behind Lee. And I said, now you understand the problem. It's just a shower though, isn't it? It's really not that deep silence. Then he goes, so what am I meant to do? And I said, same as I did, get up earlier, or have a word with your brother about how long he takes, or fit your own. There's a whole world of options, Dean. He said the money should have been spent on one everyone could use. I told him the money was mine and the whole point was that not everyone could use it. That was the feature, not the fault. He's downstairs right now trying to figure out the timing so he can slip in before Lee. I can hear him testing the water pressure through the wall. He's been three minutes late to work every day this week.
