You don't just have one standard amount of milk. The breast is complex and the way that it works is supply and demand. The more that we demand milk from the breast, the more that your body makes. So the more your baby latches or the more you pump, the more that you'll see your milk supply increasing as those hormones are also increasing based on the stimulation. Whereas if you're stimulating less, that's when we start to see the milk supply decrease. So every person is going to have a different amount of milk. It depends how often baby is requesting milk or how often you're pumping and if baby is not coming to the breast and you're not pumping, your body is going to think that your baby doesn't need that milk and that's why your supply decreases. It's a really cool process and in the same way, it's also fully possible to exclusively breastfeed twins. So you have two babies coming to the breast. Now that's double the stimulation, you can also have double the milk. It's totally possible. Stimulation is going to be one of the most important things when it comes to milk supply. There are other things that play a role like how efficiently we're removing the milk, so the latch or maybe the flange, the type of pump, other things like breast surgeries or comorbidities, but stimulation is definitely going to be high on the list of priority.
