Have you ever heard of a nipple shield? These are a tool that can be used when breastfeeding, but it's not something that everybody needs. The way that a nipple shield works, you would roll it back, kind of invert it like this, and then you would put it up against the breast with your nipple centered and then unroll it, and that nipple will be pulled into the nipple shield, and then baby would latch onto the nipple shield instead of the bare breast. And this is what that nipple shield looks like up close. See, there are holes in it, so milk is able to pass through. Now a nipple shield can be used if baby is struggling to latch. So if baby has some functional issues that's preventing them to latch at the breast without a shield, we can use this as a tool to help support that. Some people might also use this as a barrier. If the nipple is really sore, if there's any cracking going on, which is definitely a red flag, definitely time to seek support. If your nipples are so sore that you don't want to latch, and instead you want to use something as a barrier. Now nipple shields are meant to be used short term, meaning they're a tool to help support baby latch, but we do want to move away from them as soon as possible. It does create a barrier between you and your baby, and it's also another annoying thing to have to find it before you nurse your baby and clean it. If your baby is struggling to latch at the breast, or if you are having breast pain, I recommend seeing a lactation consultant before going to get a nipple shield. Oftentimes there are other adjustments that we can make first to help support that and get baby on the breast. I would not be using a nipple shield without guidance from a lactation consultant. If you have any other questions about a nipple shield, drop those in the comments below.
