The idea to move abroad is usually seen as the nuclear option for Americans. Your first, second, third and 100th plan is to try and make the best of your current reality. There is a lot of mental gymnastics that goes into justifying staying in the United States. From my perspective the idea to relocate abroad is the most reasonable reaction to the current state of things. Even our best case scenario is another 3.25 years of utter chaos and bullshit. Radicalization is snowballing under this regime. Right now it’s not too late to leave, but eventually it might be. Going from a corporate gig to a freelancer feels scary. That is until you realize the income potential when you get to set your own rates. Most people think their bosses or business owners are uniquely qualified or intelligent and that’s what lead to their power/success. But that is not true at all. You can just as easily launch a company and turn it into a profitable, sustainable, and enjoyable business. Focus on profit over passion as you choose what services you will offer. You will generally have an easier time generating larger amounts of revenue if you sell you service to businesses as opposed to individual consumers. Think about all the different ways you can package and reimagine the same services to improve profitability. While I don’t want to encourage entitled Americans to immigrate to a new country and expect to be spoken to in English…. however I do know that learning the language once you arrive is easier than trying to study from afar. These are all places you can move with remote income that have high English proficiency. Some of these countries have English as their official language or at least one of their official languages, while others just have a high level of competency among their citizens. Everyone wants a quick answer about where to move from the U.S. I wish it were that simple because I know how much people crave certainty. You want there to be one country that will answer all your problems. No country is perfect. But, there are a LOT of places better than the United States. Raising black and brown kids in the United States is statistically harder than raising white kids. Existing while being black is more dangerous in every measurable way. The entire black voting block is told the “right” way to fight is at the ballot box. Only that hasn’t worked. Rights they already theoretically (but often not in practice) had are continuing to be stripped away. It’s tone deaf to tell them to be patient for decades just to get back to where they were at the beginning of this regime. Instead, I want black and brown families to understand where they can go for safety. Other countries do not make the color of your skin a political issue. Since when did the kids become the decision makers in the family? You are the adult and you are the one to make choices like where your family will live. Staying put in a dangerous situation is not the gift you think it is for their childhood. They may not appreciate your decision to move abroad in the present moment or even for years to come. Don’t let your lack of language skills deter you from moving to a new country in your retirement. While I do think it’s respectful and helpful to learn the local language of the country you’re living in, it’s not always necessary. These 13 countries are either English speaking or have very high English proficiency. Plus, all of these countries allow you to move there using your retirement income to qualify. You aren’t moving abroad to please your followers, your friends, or your family. The choice to pack up your life and leave the United States is about getting YOU into alignment. Clients tell me their dream country to live in and almost always it’s based on seeking approval from others. They don’t want to live in countries nobody has ever heard of or places that are thought of as underdeveloped. Even though public perception and reality are often sooooo far apart, it sways people away from very viable options. My dream country to live in isn’t somewhere that checks arbitrary boxes, it is anywhere I feel at home. Don’t focus too much on your pre-conceived notions of a place. Keep an open mind and an open heart. Just remember, anyone sitting back in America judging your decisions is not on your level. People love to give advice to strangers on the internet. And the sad thing is, people take advice from strangers on the internet. But, the amount of bad advice out there is STAGGERING! Gurus are up on this app giving you advice that is straight up illegal. They confuse the fact that someone has done it and gotten away with it, as some sort of proof that it’s okay to do. The number of times I roll my eyes in shock because of bad advice is sad. Sometimes you have to make a decision based on expert advice instead of randos on the internet.
