The loneliest people in this world are the kindest because they know exactly what it feels like to be forgotten. They remember people's birthdays because no one remembered their own. They go the extra mile for anniversaries, write paragraphs no one asked for, just to make sure you feel loved. They check in just because even when no one ever checks on them. They remember little details that the common man might not think twice about like the number of jelly cats that sit on your bed or the brand of moisturizer you like, the one that doesn't make your hands break out in a rash. They remember these things because no one ever remembered theirs. They stay on the phone a little longer, apply a little faster, give a little more than they have. The loneliest people in this world are never the ones you worry about. They don't make it obvious, they don't ask for help or post about it, because over time they've learned no one comes running. So they become the person everyone runs to instead. The loneliest people will pick up every time you call, but it will never cross your mind to wonder who they have, who they call, who they text when the world isn't kind to them. It never crosses your mind that maybe the person who always knows what to say has no one who knows what to say to them, because they don't look lonely, as if loneliness is supposed to look a certain way. It's not always the kid sitting alone at lunch or the one who never speaks. Sometimes it's the loudest person in the room, sometimes it's the captain of the cheer team, and other times it's the kid with the perfect smile that all the girls drool over. And maybe that's the problem. You think loneliness is something you'd recognize, when really it's been answering your calls this whole time.
