we weren’t little girls anymore…🌷🤍 #poetrytok #originalpoem #poetry

I knocked on my sister's door and she wasn't there. For the first time in 22 years of my life, she was gone. She left nothing but an empty room with a few pictures of the little girls we used to be. I stood there longer than I needed to as if in just a few seconds she'd come storming out of the bathroom asking why I was bothering her. I wasn't prepared to miss her. I wasn't holding some box of her childhood things or watching her drive away. It was eight in the morning and I wanted coffee and for the last 22 years getting coffee meant asking my sister what she wanted before leaving. So I walked to a room without thinking and was humbled by an empty bed, empty walls and an empty closet. And only if I knew how fast we would grow up I would have savored it a little bit longer. I would have complained less about hearing her through my bedroom wall. Our bedrooms shared one for almost our entire lives and every night one of us would knock against the headboard and the other would knock back like our own secret language through a few inches of dry wall. Three knocks meant I love you and four meant I love you more. Last night I reached over to knock and my hand almost touched the wall before I remembered there was no one on the other side. I don't think this house has ever been so quiet and I know she isn't really gone just to train right away building a life of her own. I just missed the times we were building it together and I would give just about anything to grow up beside her just one more time. So last night I knocked three times anyway and nothing knocked back and for the first time in my life we weren't little girls anymore.
